By and large, sports betting is made illegal throughout the United States. However, there are a few exemptions granted to states with existing sports betting activities. The most notable of these exemptions is Nevada, which effectively gained a monopoly on sports betting in the country for 18 years. Oregon was another state to enjoy an exemption. For bookmakers, action can also be used to refer to the number of bets or volume of wagers that have been taken by bettors. Action is an expansive term, with many different use cases in sports betting. That being said, no matter the context, action always refers to when money is being placed on the outcome of a sporting event.

In the world of sports betting the word action has a couple of different meanings - related, but different.

The first use of action is to describe a wager of any kind. If you have action on a game then you have bet on it in some way. It could be that you have bet a side or a total, or you could have a prop bet or some other form of exotic bet that involves the game in some way. It just means that you a particular interest in how the game turns out. You could call someone an action junkie if they seem incapable of watching or enjoying a game without some action of some sort on it. You can also use action in this sense from the perspective of the sportsbooks. You can say that action on the game has been heavy, or that action is heavily tilted towards one team.

Making money is hard. Learning how to win at sports betting is even harder, but it doesn’t have to be. We’ve taken our years of industry experience, both from working at sports books and being sports bettors and created Action Backers to help turn you into a more savvy and profitable sports bettor.

The other usage of action that is common involves baseball betting. Starting pitchers are obviously crucially important when handicapping baseball. When betting sides in baseball you have two options. Listed pitchers means that your bet is only valid if the two pitchers that are scheduled to start the game actually do so. If one is injured or otherwise unable to start then the bet is void and your money is returned in full. The other way to bet is an action bet. In this case you are making a bet on the teams and not the pitchers, so if one or both pitchers is a late scratch you will still have a bet on the game, and the odds are still the same as they were when you placed the bet.

For instance, consider a game between the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels with the pitching matchup of Justin Verlander vs. Jered Weaver. You have bet on the Tigers. Let’s say that Verlander is a late scratch - he has to take Kate Upton to a fashion show. If you had bet listed pitchers then your bet is void, even if you are fine with the pitcher named to replace Verlander and would be willing to bet on him at the same price. If you have made an action bet, though, then you would still be backing Detroit regardless of who is pitching.

In the world of sports betting, a money line bet is simply betting on which team you expect to win. It doesn’t have anything to do with a spread. You may also see a money line bet listed as “Money Line” or “ML” in different spaces.

Betting Action

Money lines are represented in negative and positive values.

Negative money line: -145, -220, or anything similar

When you see a minus (-) sign in front of a price, it shows you that team is the favorite to win the game.

That number also indicates how much money you need to bet/spend in order to win $100.

For example, a -220 money line means you need to bet $220 in order to win $100 provided the team you bet on actually does win.

Heavy favorites are known in sports betting as a “chalk” pick. A heavy favorite usually has a number pushing +300 or more. Here, you’re wagering a lot on the favorite to win a little. Don’t assume that a heavy favorite, or chalk pick, is a guaranteed winner…

Positive money line: +145, +220, or anything similar

When you see a plus (+) sign in front of a price, it shows you that team is the underdog. Higher numbers like +400, +500, +5000, etc. represent how much of an underdog the team is in the game. The higher the number the more likely the team is expected to lose in the eyes of the oddsmakers.

The number also indicates how much money would win in comparison to every $100 you wager.

For example, a +150 money line means you would win $150 for each $100 wager you place should that team win the game.

Money line examples:

Lets use an NFL example here:

New England Patriots -240

Miami Dolphins +220

To bet the New England Patriots to win on the money line, you would need to spend $240 on the bet for a chance to win $100 if the Patriots beat the Dolphins. Your return would be $340 – the original $240 stake (bet) and the $100 bet profit.

Baseball Betting Action Pitcher

To bet the Miami Dolphins to win on the money line, you would spend $100 on the bet for a chance to win $220 if the Dolphins, as the underdog, beat the Patriots. Your return would be $320 – the original $100 stake (bet) and the $220 profit.

In both situations, it doesn’t matter if the team you bet on wins by one point or 100 points. You’re purely betting on the team you believe will win the game. As Al Davis said, “Just win, baby.” That’s exactly what you’d be looking for out of your selection. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to happen or your original stake is lost.
