This article is part of our DFS Football 101 series.

The advantage of playing on DraftKings is simple: the site's popularity allows it to host a wide variety of contests, including some with massive payouts at the top. The weekly NFL 'millionaire maker' is the largest regularly running tournament in the DFS industry, typically containing a prize pool of more than $3 million, including a $1 million prize for first place.

Contest offerings have expanded to include a 'Tiers' game and a 'Showdown' mode, but the traditional salary-based game still accounts for the vast majority of their business. The setup here is pretty simple: we get $50,000 to fill out a nine-man roster with 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX (RB/WR/TE) and 1 D/ST. Player salaries generally land in the following ranges: $4,000-7,500 for QB; $3,000-10,000 for RB; $3,000-9,500 for WR; $2,500-7,500 for TE; $2,000-4,000 for D/ST.

Compared to other large DFS sites, player pricing on DraftKings tends to be a bit sharper, quickly responding to role changes in a way that limits the number of obvious bargains. On the other hand, huge price gaps between the top and bottom players can lead to some really stunning values when an injury to a starter initially goes unreported or occurs during a mid-week practice. This is particularly true at running back, where the gap between a starter and his backup can, in some cases, approach $6,000.

DraftKings will raise a backup's price for the next week if the starter in front of him gets injured during a Sunday afternoon game, but there's nothing the site can do if the injury isn't public information until after contests for the following week have opened. Given the otherwise sharp pricing, it's important to jump on these opportunities when they arise — particularly in cash games where you tend to target higher-owned players.

Cash Games vs. Tournaments (GPPs)

The term 'cash game' covers a few different types of contests, including head-to-heads, double-ups and 50/50s. What all these games have in common is relatively good odds to make a small amount of money. The goal is simply to create a lineup with the highest mean projection — a.k.a. the one you expect to score the most points — without worrying too much about inter-player correlations or which players will be significantly under-owned by a majority of the field.

In a 50-50, for example, half the participants will receive a payout, with the highest-scoring lineup receiving the same amount of money as a lineup that finished in the 51st percentile. Each prize is a bit less than double the entry fee, as the site takes out a 'rake' of 10-15 percent. A double-up contest does exactly what its name implies, but it only pays out 42-46 percent of the field to leave room for the rake.

For those chasing a bigger payday at slimmer odds, large-field tournaments — referred to as Guaranteed Prize Pools (GPPs) — are the way to go. These are the main attractions on DraftKings and most other daily fantasy sites, with descending prize structures that allow for huge rewards in the 99th percentile, though they only pay out to the top 20-25 percent of lineups.

Tournament strategy demands a more risk-tolerant approach, most notably encouraging the use of multiple players from a single real-life game (also known as 'game stacking'). With no financial difference between a mediocre lineup and a lousy one, it almost always makes sense to use at least one pass catcher from the same team as your quarterback. There's also a good argument for using a wide receiver or tight end from the other side of that game, hoping to take advantage of a shootout that forces both teams to continue passing throughout the second half. Long story short, we're focused on the upside scenario without giving much thought to the downside if things don't work out.

There's also an element of game theory to tournament strategy, as the relative value of a huge individual performance isn't nearly as big if the player is in a high percentage of our opponents' lineups. While you may not think this is an integral part of the overall DFS strategy, it may be one of the most important aspects when it comes to large-field tournaments.

DraftKings Scoring System

DraftKings scoring is full PPR (point per reception), with 25/10 yardage and 4/6 touchdowns — basically the general standard across the fantasy football industry. However, there is one major difference in the form of three-point bonuses for 300+ passing yards, 100+ rushing yards or 100+ receiving yards. Between the PPR scoring and yardage bonuses, players can put up big point totals without scoring touchdowns. Generally speaking, the format encourages volume hunting over TD hunting, though in many cases those two goals are one and the same.

For example, an 8-110-0 receiving line is worth 22 points on DraftKings compared to 15 points on a half-PPR site without yardage bonuses like FanDuel. A 6-80-1 line would be more valuable on FanDuel (17 points), but it's actually less valuable than the first line on DraftKings (20 points). The relative de-emphasis on touchdowns encourages us to roster high-volume players in bad offenses for our DraftKings lineups, while we might favor a medium-volume player on a better team on FanDuel.

Here's the complete list of scoring settings on DK:

You might have noticed that D/ST scoring doesn't include yards allowed and doesn't account for much of a difference between yielding 14 points or 34. This isn't atypical, but it is a bit of a change for anyone who was weaned on ESPN standard scoring. As is the case on many other fantasy sites, we should focus on defenses with the best chance to pile up takeaways, rather than worrying about points or yards allowed. In practice, this would favor a team like the Rams or Browns over the Vikings or Titans.

DraftKings Casino app

DraftKings’ casino app keeps things simple so you can access your favorite games in the easiest way possible. You’ll find most of the same features as the desktop site, including a large selection of games, banking options, and casino promotions. DraftKings has married simplicity and style here, creating one of the top real money gambling apps for phones and tablets.

The app currently offers a variety of slot titles, table games, and, in some states, a live dealer lobby where games are streamed in HD, straight from the casino.

You’ll be able to download and use the app across Android and Apple devices, providing they’re relatively up to date and have enough free storage (the DraftKings app is just under 200 MB). It’s available in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan. Here’s how to get the app on your device.

DraftKings online casino games

While DraftKings started out small, the operator has expanded its games selection over time to now host a pretty good selection of slots, blackjack, video poker, roulette, and more. The operator partnered with Scientific Games in January 2020, which gave the casino the chance to really take things up a notch. Here’s an idea of what you’ll find when browsing the casino.

Slots

DraftKings Casino has over 300 slot titles, helped along the way by Scientific Games. The catalog includes classic three-reel games as well as all-new five-reel titles, with bets ranging between $0.01 and $1,500 per spin. Some of the games give you the chance to win up to 1,199 times your wager when you land three matching symbols.

You’ll find slots from NetEnt, IGT, and more when browsing. Popular titles include Triple Diamond, 88 Fortunes, Crown Egypt, Cats, and The 100,000 Pyramid.

Blackjack

You’ll find 15+ blackjack varieties at DraftKings, offering great play and high-quality graphics. The operator really focuses on its sporting background, with titles like Football Blackjack, Hockey Blackjack, and Basketball Blackjack.

The casino also has the classics, however, including single-hand and multi-hand blackjack. There are a few live variations, too, which we’ll get into shortly.

Roulette

You’ll find a handful of roulette titles at this casino. Again, there’s a couple of sport-themed options mixed with the classics like European and American roulette. Some of the options have a minimum bet as low as $1, with the choice to play on desktop or mobile.

Baccarat

There’s a very small baccarat offering at DraftKings Casino. It’s certainly not the site for you if baccarat is one of your favorites, but for most, it’s enough. You’ll find a couple of classic versions alongside a themed game or two.

Video poker

DraftKings’ video poker library has grown steadily over time. There are now over 10 titles to choose from, as well as the standard Game King selection. Games start at a minimum bet of $0.10 and go all the way up to $200 per wager. Look out for Joker Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold ’em, and Three Card Poker.

Live casino games

DraftKings has a live dealer lobby with variations of roulette, baccarat, poker, and blackjack played with a real casino dealer. Decks are shuffled by hand, and roulette balls are changed out regularly, just like the real thing in a land-based resort.

You’ll find two types of tables in the DraftKings suite — shared tables and DraftKings tables. Shared tables can be accessed on multiple casino sites, while DraftKings tables are dedicated to that site’s players only.

DraftKings currently has the only 24-hour live dealer studio in New Jersey. The site works in partnership with Evolution Gaming and is adding more games to its live lobby over time. Evolution Gaming is the leading provider of live games and has its own studio in Atlantic City.

In West Virginia, live dealer games are hosted every day between 10 a.m. and 4 a.m. Eastern Time. There are 10+ games to choose from. NetEnt has recently expanded its partnership with DraftKings to offer games on its WV and PA sites, so we could see even more in the coming year.

Pennsylvania saw the soft launch of the DraftKings live lobby in late October 2020. The site is now expected to roll out more live games.

It’s unclear when we’ll see live dealer games at this Michigan online casino, though it’s definitely coming. This lobby will also be offered by Evolution Gaming.

What is different about DraftKings NJ?

New Jersey has the largest games offering of all the DraftKings Casino sites thanks to its partnership with NetEnt. The NJ online casino is also the only one to offer live dealer games 24/7.

What is different about DraftKings PA?

DraftKings has done very well in Pennsylvania. NetEnt recently announced it would extend its partnership with DraftKings to include the state, meaning we’ll be seeing an extended offering of games in the near future.

What is different about DraftKings WV?

DraftKings has a slightly smaller game offering in the Mountain State, but similarly to PA, NetEnt has expanded its DraftKings deal to include the state. WV offers fewer live games, which run between 10 a.m. and 4 a.m. daily.

What will be different about DraftKings MI?

The DraftKings Michigan casino is the operator’s newest site, so at launch, it will likely offer fewer games than the others. It won’t be long until the MI casino can expand, however, and also incorporate a live dealer lobby into the mix.

Funding options at DraftKings Casino

Like all online casinos from reputed operators, DraftKings offers a completely secure gaming experience. The casino uses the latest in digital security technology to protect your personal data as well as your money once you sign up for real money play. All transactions are protected by 128-bit secure socket layer encryption and all personal data is secured on advanced servers that are guarded by sophisticated firewall technology.

You can make deposits into your DraftKings online casino account using one of the following payment methods:

  • Credit/Debit card
  • Play+ Prepaid
  • Bank transfer

All payments at the casino are in US dollars. Players have the option of depositing in their currency, but the money will be converted to US dollars.

Withdrawals take time at this casino, however, and this is one area that it will really need to pick up on. Currently, each withdrawal request takes time for review and approval. Once a withdrawal is approved, the winnings are sent to your account through Visa credit card, PayPal or bank check. PayPal payments take up to eight days to reach you, while checks can take as long as three weeks.

DraftKings online casino user experience

The DraftKings online casino is nothing if not attention-grabbing. The casino has a slick look and feel that integrates well with the branding of the company’s sportsbook and daily fantasy products. The graphics are of full HD quality and the animations are outstanding as well.

The casino comes with a responsive design interface powered by development in HTML5. This enables all the sections of a page to fit perfectly onto the screen of your mobile device. There is no need for the uncomfortable experience of scrolling along horizontally to check on elements that are not visible when you launch the screen because of size issues.
