Since the launch in 2018, sports betting has been a hot market in New Jersey. The sports betting handle in 2019 was more than $4.58 billion, most of which came from mobile betting.

FanDuel led the way and continues to do so. With their license through Meadowlands Racetrack, FanDuel accounted for almost half of all bets in 2019. But competition might get tighter moving forward.

Mobile sports betting was crucial in 2020, and still is in 2021, with the issues created by COVID-19. Some states have had to make rushing efforts to get online sports betting in place.

However, New Jersey had plenty of sportsbooks operating during the shutdown. As soon as some of the top sports returned in the US, players in New Jersey were quick to join the action.

With the NBA, NHL, and MLB all playing in August, New Jersey had its biggest sports betting handle in the history of the state. The official sports betting handle for August was $668 million, with $39.5 million in revenue going to the state.

There’s no doubt that the New Jersey sports betting market will continue to grow, but it is also ahead of the game compared to other states. As New York continues to drop the ball on mobile sports betting, New Jersey receives the benefit.

For those who have yet to join a sportsbook in New Jersey, it’s still a great time to do so. But there are some things that you need to look out for when choosing which one is best for you.

NJ Sportsbooks Information and Partnerships

Even though FanDuel leads the way in New Jersey, DraftKings was the first on the scene. After its partnership with Kambi, DraftKings became the first legal option for sports bettors in New Jersey.

PointsBet is an Australian company that entered New Jersey with a partnership with Meadowlands Racetrack. It is known for “PointsBetting,” which is a unique feature of the sportsbook.

William Hill has the largest sportsbook in Atlantic City that operates out of Wild Wild West Casino. Monmouth Park is the licensing partner for the company.

Some of these are also intertwined with an online casino, such as SugarHouse. This was the third legal option in New Jersey and allows you to use one account for both sports betting and casino games.

All of these sportsbooks have land-based affiliates in New Jersey, and some even have the same.

Sign up Offers and Welcome Bonuses for NJ Sportsbooks

Each sportsbook will offer a particular sign up bonus or welcome offer for customers who have yet to sign up. These might come in the form of free bets, risk-free bets, or even an odds boost for certain games.

By taking a look at these, you can determine the best welcome offer or sign up bonus available. There are specific terms and conditions, so be sure to look at more than just the headline.

For example, a free bet of $100 might require a $100 real-money bet before your account is credited. Some requirements are tied to offers that must be completed to receive the bonus.

There will also be promo codes available upon signing up. We will provide those in our reviews if they are needed. Some require them, and some don’t. But it is crucial to check and see if one is required before completing the sign-up process.

NJ Sports Betting: Ongoing Promotions at Sportsbooks

When joining a sportsbook, you don’t want the special offers to end after the welcome bonus. A majority of the legal sportsbooks in New Jersey will continue to offer promotions to their current customers. Some are much better and more frequent with their offers than others.

Almost every website and app will have a promotions page that shows their ongoing offers. You can get a good feel about what kind of promos they will continuously provide their customers.

A lot of sportsbooks favor one sport over another, while some like promotions with odds boosts or parlays. You will notice the tendencies and learn what the sportsbooks offers will look like when you are a customer.

Some promotions have a time limit attached to them, so you only have so long to place a bet and receive your bonus. For example, many sportsbooks require you to place a real-money wager within seven days of creating an account to receive the promotion.

Also, the free bet might be taken away after a certain amount of time. You will want to check on the rules of the promotion to use it properly.

NJ Sports Betting Features

The offers and promotions will be all for nothing if it does not offer the betting features you want in a sportsbook. There are plenty of aspects to look for when choosing the sportsbook with the best features.

In-play and live betting is one of the essential features of a sportsbook. There will be different offers and varying markets for live betting.

For some, the cash-out feature is excellent to use. This is a way to end your bet while the game is still in play and can be used to minimize your losses.

Some of these sportsbooks will also offer live streams for some of the games available. There also might be a requirement to watch the game. For example, some will not let you watch a game unless you have placed at least a $1 bet for it.

The best sportsbooks have a lot of flexibility with betting. Bet builders, parlay builders, and other customized betting options are all things to keep in mind.

When analyzing different odds, it is noticeable that some sportsbooks have better odds than others. When choosing the one to use, I always check how the odds look and how high the vig is.

When looking at the odds, I ensure that they are available for all of the basic bets such as moneyline, spread, over/under, props, futures, and parlays.

These special features should be plentiful when looking at the bigger sporting events such as the Super Bowl, March Madness, NBA Finals, and more.

How NJ Mobile Sports Betting Works

After you sign up to one of the sportsbooks with a mobile app through one of our links, you are good to start placing bets from your mobile app. New Jersey sports betting apps are the source of at least nine out of every ten bets in the state, so this is the most popular and convenient way to wager.

Ensuring that the app has great usability is a must before signing up. The ones that are easy to use and have a similar layout to the website are always the best.

To sign up on the app, you need to be the age of 21 or over and live in New Jersey. When betting on the app, geo-location will ensure that you are within the state lines. If you are not, or travel to another state, you will not be allowed to bet.

When deciding on a mobile sportsbook, you will need to make sure that it is available for your phone. Most will have downloads available for iPhone and Android devices.

NJ Sportsbooks Banking Options

Every sportsbook will provide a different list of deposit and withdrawal options. Some lists are a lot longer than others. You will want to choose the sportsbook that has the methods you wish to use.

Acceptance of online banking, PayPal, Skrill, credit and debit cards, Play+ cards, PayNearMe, echecks, cash at the casino cage, etc. are all options to consider. Each one of these methods will have a certain minimum and maximum deposit.

It is standard for most of these sportsbooks to have fewer withdrawal options than for deposits. These methods aren’t as instant, so I always check the time it takes for a deposit to hit my account.

You will want to check to see how the bonuses and free bets work as far as withdrawing. You might be required to play through a certain amount for your free credits to become available to withdraw.

All of the free bets and bonuses differ from straight cash, so you will need to realize the difference.

NJ Sports Betting Loyalty Programs

Loyalty programs are few and far between, but for someone who bets a large amount, it’s a nice bonus. A few of these sportsbooks keep track of points or the amount you bet, and then you will receive gifts or prizes for being loyal to the sportsbook.

Sportsbook

Prizes could come in the form of free bets, enhanced odds, or even cash-back. It’s nice to have a sportsbook that rewards you whether or not you are winning or losing.

There may often be tiers or points, and the sportsbook often shows what it takes to gain rewards. The requirements of the system in place is essential to look at to see if you will even qualify for the benefits.

While the traditional loyalty programs are not plentiful, some sportsbooks make up for it with their ongoing promotions. But keep in mind, loyalty rewards and promotions for any current customers differ. Loyalty rewards often have a higher upside since you are a bonified customer.

Customer Support Options for NJ Sports Betting

The quality of customer service options differs with each sportsbook. It’s nice to have a reliable customer service team to help out with any issues you may encounter.

One thing to look at is the methods in which you can contact them. Sportsbook may have an email, phone number, and live chat that you can use, while others may only have one out of the three.

I always like to check to see if there is a useful FAQ section. Most questions that you may have could be addressed here, without the need to reach out to a live representative.

In our reviews, we will show what is often the best way to get in contact with the sportsbook. Sometimes live chat is the way to go, while others are quicker to answer a phone call.

Security and Trust of Legal NJ Sportsbooks

Sports betting is legal in New Jersey and has been since 2018. All of the sportsbooks and reviews on our website are going to be legal to use.

All of them must abide by guidelines set by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This makes all of them legit, and you can feel safe providing personal information such as bank accounts or credit cards.

Offshore sportsbooks are not legal in New Jersey. If you see one of these online that are not on our website, it might be because it is an offshore sportsbook.

Legal sportsbooks will have the DGE seal to show that it is licensed and regulated by the state.

NJ Sports Betting in 2021: How did we get here?

After a legal battle stretching back nearly a decade, New Jersey has won the right to offer regulated sports betting at a legal NJ sportsbook.

The Garden State officially launched legal sports betting June 14, 2018, three days after Gov. Phil Murphy signed sports betting legislation into law.

Gov. Murphy made the first wager in the state at Monmouth Park Racetrack in North Jersey. The Borgata in Atlantic City opened its sportsbook to patrons 30 minutes later.

All the remaining Atlantic City properties launched their own in-house NJ sportsbooks and their own NJ online sports betting sites.

NJ started the sports betting uprising

New Jersey has been fighting for the ability to legalize and regulate sports betting since 2012. The state tried multiple ways to circumvent the federal ban on state-regulated sports betting (the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, or PASPA) and each time was blocked by the sports leagues challenging those attempts in court.

Finally, in 2017, New Jersey — to the surprise of many observers — was granted a request for its case to be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in the case in late 2017 and considered the case for the next few months. While the case is on its face about sports betting, there are myriad other implications for the relationship between the state and the federal government arising out of the case. That’s one of the reasons the court heard the case in the first place, and one of the reasons why the decision took so long to make.

But now, after fighting a battle for most of the current decade, one that many observers thought to be hopeless, regulated, legal sports betting is alive in New Jersey.

New Jersey sports betting FAQ

Is legal sports betting in New Jersey available?

YES. After a sports betting bill moved through the New Jersey legislature, Gov. Phil Murphy signed the bill into law June 11, 2018.

The first legal wager took place at Monmouth Park on June 14, and all the remaining AC properties have followed with their own NJ sportsbook: Borgata, Ocean Resort, Tropicana, Harrahs, Caesars, Resorts, Ballys, and Golden Nugget.

NJ online sports betting is also legal with many NJ online sportsbooks available. Anyone 21 years and older are allowed to place legal wagers at these licensed sportsbooks.

Sportsbook

Who offers legal sports betting?

Legal NJ sportsbook and NJ online sports betting sites are ultimately controlled by the same license holders who currently offer casino gambling or horse race betting in the state, including the properties mentioned above that already launched sportsbooks. Note: these license holders may as well partner with other brands, as is the case with New Jersey’s legal online casino sites.

Where can I place sports bets?

You can expect a lineup for NJ’s legal sports betting sites that closely match the kinds of gambling you can do when you’re at a Las Vegas sportsbook. Many of Atlantic City’s casinos already operate sportsbooks in Las Vegas, so the experience will be very familiar to those who have bet at Caesars in Las Vegas or MGM. Those are just two of the operators who have existing operations in other jurisdictions, meaning they already have a blueprint in place for offering legal, regulated sports betting in New Jersey.

Why should I choose legal sports betting?

The opportunity to bet at legal, regulated sportsbooks is one that consumers should take seriously. You never know what you’re getting when betting illegally, while legal sportsbooks in New Jersey offer the safety and security of knowing that your details are protected and that you’ll be paid when you win. We may find that many illegal sports betting sites stop serving the New Jersey market; which is what happened after NJ legalized online casino and poker games.

What if I live New Jersey, but currently outside the state?

Sorry bettors. You must be inside state borders of New Jersey to place bets at NJ sports betting apps and sites. All legal NJ sportsbooks use geofencing technology to determine your location, so there is no way around it.

What if I don’t live in New Jersey, but in the state currently?

YES! You don’t need to be a resident of NJ to play at the legal NJ online sportsbooks. It’s all about your current location at the time you make the bets.

Will I get taxed on winning sports bets?

Yes, sports betting legally in New Jersey is taxable income. Depending on the online sports betting site, the operator is supposed to notify the IRS when you win a certain amount of money.

But what if I lose those winnings?

NJ online sports betting losses can actually be tax deductible if you itemize your deductions and keep detailed records of wins and losses. But the losses you deduct cannot exceed the winnings.
